Croatian - Canadian Music Relations

For over a decade, the Cantus Ensemble has participated in the CROATIAN–CANADIAN MUSICAL RELATIONS project.

The cultural-musical exchange has thus far included guest performances by the Cantus Ensemble and a number of renowned Croatian musicians such as the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet and the violin and piano duo Ivan Novinc and Srđan Čaldarović, as well as reciprocal performances in Croatia by Canadian ensembles such as the Les Amis, Penderecki String Quartet and others. The aim of this cross-continental creation of a shared stage is to maintain continuity through a common interest – primarily contemporary music and its production. For this reason and also for the potency of this stage we have so far successfully organized at least one Croatian-Canadian event a year.

On two occasions, in 2008 and 2014, the Cantus Ensemble visited Toronto, Ottawa and Montréal, and presented over 20 compositions by Croatian contemporary composers to an exceptionally attentive audience at the most important Canadian venues such as the Glenn Gould Studio or the Toronto Opera House. On several occasions the concerts included an interaction and joint music playing between the Cantus Ensemble and Canadian musicians. Along with the exchange of music and musicians, the project also promotes new creative cross-ocean impulses and continuous communication between the most important music institutions of both countries. So far, SoundXis, Music Biennale Zagreb, Zadar Concert Office, Canadian Sinfonietta, Zagreb Philharmonic and others have participated in this project.
