With the beginning of the new season, Cantus Ensambl, our most prominent ensemble for contemporary music, opens an exciting musical autumn filled with numerous concerts and guest appearances.
Summer heat alternates with storms, nature reveals itself in all its capriciousness, and the Cantus Ensemble is already thinking about autumn!
The past season of the Cantus Ensemble was highly intensive and gave rise to numerous new collaborations and plans that will come to fruition in the coming years. It all began with the regular performance at the Milko Kelemen Days in Slatina, where an intriguing program featuring works by the legendary Kelemen as well as three young contemporary composers – Dora Remenar, Helena Skljarov, and Linda Uran – was presented at the hall of the Public Open University.
The third concert of the Cantus Ensemble cycle, also the first one this year, will take place on Monday, February 13, 2023 at 8:00 p.m., in the Small Hall of the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall. The COLLISIONS concert, led by Ivan Josip Skender, will showcase three works by notable contemporary composers who have already made their mark in 20th-century music history. These pieces demonstrate three distinct and complex approaches to contemporary sound.
The final concert of the Cantus Ensemble season will be performed by their long-time collaborators, the renowned Canadian ensemble Turning Point from Vancouver, Canada. Counterparts Turning Point and Cantus were founded around the same time in the early 2000s, and we have been keeping track of their collaboration for a while.

Alongside performing numerous compositions, Cantus Ensemble will perform Boris Jakopović's new piece Stage Dimmed. Days prior to the performance, the composer reveals the new composition details and reflects on his studies in Ukraine.
Tea Kulaš, a soloist, is to debut a brand new piece for the organ solo at the forthcoming Cantus Ensemble concert on 17 December 2022.
It was composed by the youngest author in the program, Danijel Legin, a composer, pedagogue, also the winner of the Stjepan Šulek award, Rudolf and Margita Matz scholarship, and many other grants and commissions; an author who is also engaged in sheet music publishing.
The second Cantus Ensemble concert, SOLO-TUTTI, is to take place on Saturday, 17 December 2022, in the Small Hall of Vatroslav Lisinski, starting at 8 PM.
Conducted by Berislav Šipuš, Cantus Ensemble will deliver three compositions of Croatian authors, of which two are to be first performances, as well as two pieces by foreign authors.
Cantus Ensemble is set to perform on Monday at 8 PM with their first concert in the new Zagreb season of 2022. After the guest performance in Slatina where it opened the Milko Kelemen Days festival, this longest-running Croatian ensemble for contemporary music is to return to the Small Hall of Vatroslav Lisinski, conducted by maestro Berislav Šipuš.
