Cantus Ensemble plays a key role in promoting and performing contemporary music in Croatia and is one of the most prominent musical entities that continuously contributes to the development of both the domestic and international music scene. Founded under the auspices of the Croatian Composers' Society, Cantus Ensemble acts as a bridge between Croatian composers and a wider European and global audience, standing out as a leading interpreter of contemporary musical production.
Music Biennale Zagreb
The presence of Cantus Ensemble at the Music Biennale Zagreb, the most important contemporary music festival in the region, further confirms its significance within the context of the regional music scene. This festival, organized by the Croatian Composers' Society, provides a platform for showcasing innovative musical works and performers, and Cantus Ensemble is often present as one of the main participants, promoting contemporary music by both local and international composers.
Cantus Ensemble in a Global Context
In a broader European context, Cantus Ensemble collaborates with numerous international artists and composers, contributing to the exchange of ideas and innovations in contemporary music. Its importance is also recognized on a global scale – it has participated in many prestigious festivals and concerts, confirming its status as one of the key ambassadors of the Croatian contemporary music scene.
Berislav Šipuš, as the long-time conductor and artistic director of Cantus Ensemble, has played a crucial role in shaping the ensemble and its repertoire. Šipuš’s vision and dedication to contemporary music have brought international recognition to the ensemble, and his work has connected the Croatian music scene with leading global trends in contemporary music. Beyond his work with Cantus Ensemble, Berislav Šipuš has also played a significant role at the Music Biennale Zagreb, where, as a composer and artistic director, he has been involved in numerous projects that have enriched the contemporary music scene internationally.
Under the leadership of artists like Berislav Šipuš, Cantus Ensemble plays an irreplaceable role in affirming contemporary music on the regional, European, and global stage.
A New Rich Concert Season
This is why we are thrilled to announce the new concert season; both in Croatia and abroad, and a special experience will certainly be hearing and witnessing Cantus Ensemble and our music in different contexts, such as the Palladium Theater in Rome. This building is the ideal gateway to the historic garden city of Garbatella, where the cinema/theater is located, overlooking Piazza Bartolomeo Romano. It feels almost surreal to watch and listen to music in such an environment. It is at this moment that the audience truly becomes aware of the significance of our music, in a global context, if they haven’t already.
For those who find concerts in Croatia more accessible, equally magnificent concerts await in the Small Hall of Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall.
Cantus Ensemble opens its new season with a concert that features world premieres of works by Croatian composers – no less than five new scores! Cantus Goes on the Road is the title of the first concert, and where they are headed and what they are taking with them into the world under the baton of Berislav Šipuš, come and hear on October 7, 2024.
The second concert of the season, on December 9, 2024, in Zagreb, will feature the work Passione – Voci vicine, voci lontane by Italian composer Fabio Cifarelli Ciardi for chamber ensemble, electronics, video, and a journalist, alongside Internazionale by Silvio Foretić and L’indifferenza for narrator and strings by Nicola Sani. The concert program is deeply politically and socially engaged, with music critic Branimir Pofuk taking on the role of a journalist, delivering critical commentary on the relationship between politics and our everyday lives.
The repertoire for the remaining concerts is also rich with diverse contemporary pursuits, with international guests, and in addition to regular concerts, Cantus Ensemble also announces performances in Croatia and tours in Italy and Canada.
