Cantus Ensemble to kick off the new season with a concert at the Vatroslav Lisinski Small Hall on 14 November 2022
Cantus Ensemble is set to perform on Monday at 8 PM with their first concert in the new Zagreb season of 2022.
After the guest performance in Slatina where it opened the Milko Kelemen Days festival, this longest-running Croatian ensemble for contemporary music is to return to the Small Hall of Vatroslav Lisinski, conducted by maestro Berislav Šipuš.
The concert entitled Dedications... (Cro. Posvete...) honors various renowned composers on the occasion of their death anniversaries and birthdays.
Ten years after the demise of the great American composer Elliot Carter, Cantus shall play his final piece “Epigrams” – twelve short compositions of various moods for a piano trio. The English composer Jonathan Harvey also shares the anniversary, so Cantus will commemorate him with another trio; an energetic virtuoso piece “The Riot”, composed for the flute, bass clarinet, and piano.
Dubravko Detoni, as the frequent Cantus Ensemble guest, is to celebrate his recent 85th birthday with a performance of his original composition “dolce furioso”. It is a piece that the ensemble often resorts to; from their birthday celebration at the 2021 Music Biennal Zagreb, all the way through performances in China, Canada, and Croatia-wide. It was also recorded for their celebratory edition in the discography.
Grand Croatian composer Marko Ruždjak, the master of “music silences”, passed ten years ago. The program shall feature Ruždjak's “La Frontera” – a piece with 'textual-semantic elements' extracted from the poetry of women poets of various backgrounds (Gloria E. Anzaldúa, Juana Inés de la Cruz, Countess [Beatritz] de Dia and Emily Dickinson). Young soprano Irma Dragičević is to join the ensemble in the delivery.
The sound of the ensemble is to be enriched with electronics from Frano Đurović's composition “io sono je t'aime”. Đurović composed it for the Swedish ensemble Mimitabu, and it was first performed at the Opatija Music Forum in 2019, along the lines of Đurović’s works named after the lines of popular songs, in this case, one of the band Let 3. On the occasion, Irena Paulus writes that towards the end of the composition “one becomes aware of the 'imperfections of electronics'”, highlighting its “slight provocative” nature.
This year, another jubilee was celebrated by the composer, conductor, writer, and pedagogue Mladen Tarbuk; one of the most active members of the Croatian music life. His composition for a chamber ensemble “Twist” was marked by the use of quarter tone. The composer was inspired by T.S. Eliot's poem Ash Wednesday.
Tickets for the Cantus Ensemble concerts are available on ulaznice.hr. The ticket price is 40 HRK.
