Cantus Ensemble announces new concert season; the first one to take place on 14 November!

As part of the Croatian Composers’ Society, Cantus Ensemble is the only Croatian contemporary music ensemble with continuity of over 20 years. Now, they have officially announced the new season during which they will perform five concerts, but host several guest appearances.

Following the opening concert of Milko Kelemen Days in Slatina on 6 of October, Cantus Ensemble will return to Zagreb, namely the Small Hall of the Lisinski Concert Hall. This event will also mark the ensemble’s return to the Small Hall after performing in various venues in Zagreb for several seasons. The first concert is set to take place on 14 November.

Conducted by its art director Berislav Šipuš, and supported by the renowned Croatian instrumentalists Lucija Ercegovac and Katarina Krpan as the soloists of the concerts, they are to perform the works of domestic and foreign composers. In this manner, it will celebrate their birthdays and commemorate their anniversaries.

The audiences of the Small Hall of the Lisinski Concert Hall will get the opportunity to hear Elliot Carter’s Epigrams for the violin, cello, and piano, as well as Jonathan Harvey’s The Riot for the flute, bass clarinet, and piano. The ensemble shall perform Dubravko Detoni’s dolce furioso, for chamber ensemble, to celebrate his 85th birthday. On the other hand, Marko Ruždjak’s La Frontera for voice and chamber ensemble is to be performed on the occasion of his 10th death anniversary.

The ensemble is to have the first-premiere Vjejkoslav Nježić’s concert for piano and chamber ensemble at this concert. They are also to present Mladen Tarbuk’s Twist for chamber ensemble.

Cantus Ensemble will round up the current year with the second concert of the season, scheduled for 17 December, while the first concert of the new year is scheduled for 13 February 2023. Afterward, it will participate in the 32nd Music Biennale Zagreb on 17 April 2023. That will also be the first concert outside the Small Hall of Vatroslav Lisinski, namely in Pogon Jedinstvo. The season will be concluded on 15th May 2023 by the guest ensemble from Canada, Turning Point.
