Klasika na Mirinama
July 20th 2022, Wednesday, Mirine, Krk (Omišalj - Njivice), 9 pm

Cantus Ensemble
Berislav Šipuš, conductor

Berislav Šipuš, Tan Hetti
Olja Jelaska, Leptiri (Afrička ljubica – Noćurak – Ružine latice)
Anđelko Klobučar, Music for Cantus Ensemble (Intrada – Intermezzo – Ricercare)
Boris Papandopulo, Chember Simphony (I – II – III)

For this occasion, Cantus chose its classics, i.e. music that is new but has already been repeatedly confirmed and accepted by different audiences at frequent performances. These are works by Croatian composers, which Cantus regularly promotes:

Tan Hetti is the first composition that Berislav Šipuš, the founder and artistic director of Cantus, dedicated to his ensemble. He wrote it in 2002 as the beginning of a cycle of compositions with enigmatic titles (with each subsequent one, only one letter changes, so Tin Hatti and Ten Hotti followed). Šipuš is also the conductor of this concert. The giant of Croatian organ and contemporary music, Anđelko Klobučar, who passed away in 2016, also wrote a piece, especially for this ensemble. He called it Music for Cantus Ensemble, and in three movements he brought the range from solemn and powerful expression to quiet and mystical. Composer Olja Jelaska from Split dedicated her composition Butterflies to Cantus, an atmospheric work to which the Ensemble regularly returns.

The oldest work on the program is the Chamber Symphony by Boris Papandopoulo, one of the most important Croatian composers. He composed it in 1985, but it was only 18 years later (and twelve after the composer's death) that the Cantus Ensemble, which was at the beginning of its journey, first performed it. Papandopulo composed the piece in Tribunj, for Nonet from Rostock, in three movements, in which we find a hybrid of everything that his work is recognizable for - drama, pastoral and folklore elements, as well as frequent playfulness.
